Why Standard Glass Provides No Fire Resistance

Standard toughened glass and acoustic laminated glass are both classified as safety glass under BS EN 12600, meaning they break safely without creating sharp shards. However, safety in the context of human impact is entirely different from fire resistance. When standard toughened glass is exposed to the radiant heat of a fire, it will crack and fail relatively quickly, allowing fire, heat, and smoke to pass through. Standard laminated glass may hold together slightly longer but similarly provides no meaningful fire resistance.

Fire-rated glass is a different product altogether. It uses specialist glass compositions that have been developed and tested specifically to resist fire for defined periods. These are not standard commercial glass products and cannot be substituted with toughened or laminated glass, regardless of thickness or specification.

When Are Fire-Rated Glass Partitions Required?

Approved Document B governs fire safety in buildings, covering means of escape, fire resistance of structural elements, spread of fire, access for the fire service, and related requirements.

• Partitions that form the boundary of a protected escape route, such as a corridor leading to a fire exit or a stairwell enclosure. These must resist fire for long enough to allow occupants to escape safely.

• EW (Integrity and Radiation Control): The glass resists flames, hot gases, and limits radiant heat to a specified level. Appropriate where the glass faces an escape route and people might be exposed to radiant heat on the other side.
• EI (Integrity and Insulation): The glass resists flames, hot gases, and limits temperature rise on the non-fire side. The highest level of fire resistance available for a glazed element, appropriate for the most demanding applications.

The most commonly specified ratings in commercial office buildings are EW30 and EW60, which provide integrity and radiation control for 30 or 60 minutes respectively. EI-rated glass is used in applications where the partition must function as a full fire barrier, limiting both radiant heat and temperature rise on the protected side.

The Importance of Certified System Installation

Fire-rated glass partitions must be installed as part of a tested and certified system. The fire rating applies to the combination of glass, frame, fixing method, seals, and door assembly as a complete system, not to the glass panel alone. Substituting any component of a certified system with a different product or installation method invalidates the fire rating, even if the substituted component appears equivalent.

This means that fire-rated glass partition installations must be carried out by installers who are trained and certified to install the specific system being used, using the exact components specified in the certification. The system certificate should be available from the installer and retained as part of the building’s fire safety documentation.
